College Prep Mentors Needed!
Want to help an LAHS student become the first in their family to attend college? Join our team of AVID College Mentors!
MVLA Scholars is now recruiting caring community members to help AVID seniors at LAHS navigate the college admissions process. AVID is an LAHS class that offers academic support to a cohort of first-generation students starting in 9th grade. In their senior year, with the help of their teacher and mentors, AVID students are busy researching colleges and majors, writing essays and completing college applications, and applying for financial aid and scholarships. An AVID College Mentor works with 2-3 students they get to know and support throughout the school year.
For the 2022-23 school year, mentors will meet with students on campus on Mondays during their first or second period AVID class (8:40-9:25am or 9:32-10:22am). Training and weekly agendas will be provided so mentors do NOT have to be experts in the college application process, but they DO need to be able to commit to regularly attending the weekly classes at LAHS.
